2024 Economic Outlook – How a Productivity Burst is Producing Volatility in Markets and Business Operations
Productivity is called the magic elixir by economists. Magic. One doesn’t normally associate economics with magic, but like the power of compounding, productivity has the capacity to produce astounding results. Magic also implies a bit of mystery and there are certainly gaps in our understanding of exactly when and how productivity is likely to manifest itself. That uncertainty is where the volatility comes in. Fortunately, there are signposts that asset managers and business leaders can follow to help them manage the volatility and capitalize on the productivity.
Is the Fourth Industrial Revolution Finally Here? What You Need to Know About AI and the Economy
The World Economic Forum first introduced the concept of the Fourth Industrial Revolution to the world of business in 2015. An era where technology would usher in new ways of working and transform economies was forecast. But in the period from 2015 to 2022, productivity growth was slow and technology was intermittently diffused throughout the economy. The Solow Paradox, “You can see the computer age everywhere but in the productivity statistic” was alive and well from 1987 until just recently. However, advances in artificial intelligence have changed all that. The economic impact of AI is likely to be broad based, all encompassing and impactful. Learn what do you need to know to avoid risks and reap the benefits of AI.
In a World of Escalating Geopolitical Risk – Whither Defense Spending and What Does it Mean for the Economy?
Looking at modern technology, an oft heard refrain is that the invention came from military technology projects. The microwave oven: military. The fax machine: military. The internet: military. GPS: military. Drones: military. So why does the economic literature attribute military spending to negative spillovers to economic output? Given the current geopolitical environment and already high levels of debt, increased military spending that subtracts from GDP is not a viable option. Policy makers need to consider military spending design and programs that have positive spillovers to the larger economy.
