Joan Pastor, Ph.D., is president of JPA International, Inc., an organizational consulting company that has been providing services to organizations globally since 1979.  She has taken a number of organizations through complete redesign and company-wide changes in order to be more efficient, competitive and proactive, especially in global markets.  Joan has over 23 years of experience facilitating groups to define and improve their work procedures and departmental or core organizational processes, including projects and conferences associated with the White House and very senior officials in our government and others around the world.  She specializes in operational risk, organizational change and development and business process mapping, and has taught courses in these arenas around the world for over 20 years.  She assists senior management groups regularly on their strategic planning efforts, as well as on alliances, mergers and acquisitions.  She also frequently conducts executive and leadership assessment, development and coaching.

In 2003, she was awarded the National Leadership Award by the U.S. Business Advisory Council.  Joan is a member of the Institute for Internal Auditors, the American Psychological Association and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.  She was awarded her Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology & Clinical Psychology in 2003. In 2007, the IIA published her book: Conflict Management and Negotiation Skills for Internal Auditors.

Specific Projects Related to Operational Development and Risk Management

Some of her projects with audit functions of major corporations have been extensive.  For example, over a three year period, she trained and consulted with all of the supervisors and managers at Ford Credit (including the audit department) in various conflict management, leadership and performance management skills.  She worked with senior management and employees at the US corporate offices of Union Bay Sportswear to transform their organizational culture and processes to support business growth.  Joan also helped facilitate the partnership that Vanderbilt University developed with hospitals and other colleges in Nashville, which resulted in several new best practices and significantly increased grants and funding to the University.  She developed a three hour training DVD on audit interviewing skills (including role plays using real auditors!) for PepsiCo.  Joan has assisted numerous audit executives in defining and building their risk assessment model, operational risk assessment approach and audit plan, and worked with the National Security Agency extensively for a number of years as they reprioritized their mission and reorganized their operations.  Joan is currently developing numerous programs for the IIA, including their whistleblowing, communication skills and ERM Implementation programs, and is assisting the AICPA in the development of the guidelines for the development and management of audit committees.
